Fing init error while creating folders and conf: boost::filesystem::copy_file: T
he system cannot find the path specified: "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.W

Hi.

I'm sorry for the very late response. It seems that you have all the conditions met (administrator account, XP 32bit).

Can you also post the exact version? Click on "Start | Run..." and type "winver". Report the edition of XP (Home, Professional, Media Center, Professional x64) and the complete build number.

Fing 1.4 will come out soon, maybe you could give it a try to see if the problem gets fixed.

Do you log in using the account "sergey.HUMMINGBIRD" or as "sergey"? Can you verify if you have a directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Overlook\Fing\" or if you have a directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Overlook\Fing\"?

Ok. It seems there is a strange combination of settings somewhere in your system. Please do the following: Click on "Start | Run.." and type "cmd".

Then type the following

Code: Select all
echo %ALLUSERSPROFILE%
(Should be C:\Documents and Settings\All Users)

echo %APPDATA%
(Should be C:\Documents and Settings\sergey\Application Data)

echo %COMPUTERNAME%
(Should be HUMMINGBIRD)

echo %HOMEDRIVE%
(Should be C:)

echo %HOMEPATH%
(Should be \Documents and Settings\sergey)

echo %TEMP%
(Should be C:\DOCUME~1\sergey\LOCALS~1\Temp)

echo %USERNAME%
(Should be sergey)

echo %USERPROFILE%
(Should be C:\Documents and Settings\sergey)

Please report those who are different. Maybe you have some global environment variable or Registry entry that is pointing to the wrong directory.

I have almost the same results on my XP box -
Is "All Users.WINDOWS" is the same as "All User" for example?
For %HOMEPATH% result is "sergey.HUMMINGBIRD" not "sergey"
Code: Select all
J:\CLearning>echo %ALLUSERSPROFILE%
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS

J:\CLearning>echo %APPDATA%
C:\Documents and Settings\sergey.HUMMINGBIRD\Application Data

J:\CLearning>echo %COMPUTERNAME%
HUMMINGBIRD

J:\CLearning>echo %HOMEDRIVE%
C:

J:\CLearning>echo %HOMEPATH%
\Documents and Settings\sergey.HUMMINGBIRD

J:\CLearning>echo %TEMP%
C:\DOCUME~1\SERGEY~1.HUM\LOCALS~1\Temp

J:\CLearning>echo %USERNAME%
sergey

J:\CLearning>echo %USERPROFILE%
C:\Documents and Settings\sergey.HUMMINGBIRD

Hi.

You have probably lost Full Control permissions on your profile folder, in the "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings" folder. It may happen because you detached and re-attached your hard drive (I can see you are using J: to store user data, which maybe is a network drive or an external drive).

Windows XP creates a new folder the next time you log on. The new profile is named:

UserName - if the older profile was deleted.
UserName.ComputerName - if the old profile exists.
UserName.ComputerName.000 - if UserName.ComputerName exists.
UserName.ComputerName.001 - if UserName.ComputerName.000 exists.

Therefore your account "sergey" at some point in time has lost its original profile folder and is now using the new folder "sergey.HUMMINGBIRD". You should probably fix it. You can restore the user profile to the default name "sergey" following one of the suggestions below. After you have restored it to the original name, Fing should work as expected.

I've followed your recommendations.
This resource was extremely useful --- http://windowsxp.mvps.org/userpath.htm
But ... ((
The same story ---

C:\Documents and Settings\sergey>fing
Error: unable to load discovery configuration properties.

Now log located at C:\Documents and Settings\sergey\Application Data\Overlook\Fing\log

Did you fix also the "All Users" profile? From your previous entry you said that

echo %ALLUSERSPROFILE% => C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS

but you also said you had no such folder. What is the situation now? Or, to make it easier, the situation you should end up with is:

a) you should have a folder named "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"
b) you should have a folder named "C:\Documents and Settings\sergey"
c) none of the following environment variables should contain the computer name: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%, %APPDATA%, %HOMEPATH%, %TEMP%, %USERNAME%, %USERPROFILE%

When you are in such a condition, reboot, un-install and re-install Fing and it should all work.
